This post is going to be part invitation for discussion/opinions, and part rant. Here it goes:
So as we all know, I’m working 3 jobs. Let’s do a little background of my office space.
Job A: The Original Job. I have a large office, all to myself. Well mostly. My boss’s office is adjacent to mine, and the only way in his is through mine. But there’s a full wall (and door) that divide it. So really, my own office.
Job B: The New Job. This office is approximately the same size. However, there is NO privacy, save for the 2 file cabinets in the center of the room that I think are there to create the illusion of separation. On one side I can be found, sandwiched in between my 2 supervisors. And when I say sandwiched, I’m not joking. We have wall to wall desk, and it’s so tight that my desk isn’t even properly on the ground; each side is resting on the respective desk next to it. On the other side of this file cabinet lies: a large desk/counter space for a doctor to use, a small desk for a medical student or intern to use, and an oversized arm chair used by at least one other resident or med student with a laptop. Add onto that the miscellaneous chairs that are floating around the office. People frequently come sit on those and do their patient notes on their laptops. Let’s call this what it is: CROWDED.
Job C: The Career Path. I have an office of approximately half the size of either of the other 2. There are 3 desks with (ancient) computers, and a small filing cabinet that holds the communal printer. There’s also a couch. I believe that at the current time there’s 6 +/- 1 of us sharing these 3 work stations. Sometimes there are meetings, and only one person can use the office at a time. Again, crowded.
Here’s where it gets fun. I get that in a small space I’m going to overhear conversations and it’s never really going to be quiet. I get that there are lots of other people that hear my conversations and phone calls. No big deal. At Job C, this happens seamlessly. We all take care to make sure no one’s toes are stepped on, and that everyone has a place to work at all times. People are very considerate at Job C. People were considerate at Job B too, until this new intern showed up last week. She’s first year post-med school, and it seems her ego is already about the size of all 3 offices combined. I’m not sure if it’s the title “doctor” or the fact that she’s tall and attractive, but this bitch needs to tone it down a little.
Last week there was a patient who made somewhat of a complicated request for his prescriptions. I think it was like call in some to X pharmacy and the rest to Y pharmacy. It’s not that hard, at least in my personal opinion. Apparently this is too complicated for this intern. This nurse kept coming into the office and asking if the patient’s meds were called in, and she kept saying “I don’t know where the fuck anything is supposed to be. Can’t the patient figure it out?” Totally rude, swearing up a storm, and generally being loud and irritating. I get that you’re a doctor and that you’ve probably had a relatively long day, but STFU and take care of this.
Today was no different. New patient, new issue. I had just about tuned it all out, when she puts on the radio. And not at a reasonable volume either. Just blasting away some music. I just looked at one of my supervisors, who looked at me with the same expression. Are you kidding me?? And we’re not talking about the classical music station. It was a rock station. I love that kind of music, but some songs really just bother me. Like the Ting Ting’s “That’s not my name”. I can’t fucking stand that song. And I had to listen to it, followed by a variety of others. What the fuck is wrong with you? Do you not see the other people in the office? Or do you see us and think it’s OK to do cuz all the doctors are out of the office and it’s just “staff”? Get off your high horse and put on some fucking headphones.
end rant.
Now here’s the invitation for opinions/discussion. Am I wrong in being irritated? Like overreacting? Or is this generally inconsiderate?
Go!
