Lesson Learned

Ok so those super cute shoes I bought on Tuesday. The ones that were a half size too small but didn’t feel that tight. Yeah those. Those are going to be sold or given away.

I made the mistake of wearing these babies yesterday. It’s usually never fun breaking in a new pair of shoes, but add a busy day to that equation and you’re in for a mess. I worked 12 hours yesterday – recipe for a disaster. (more…)

Marla

I’m not even sure where to start with this. I guess I could start just by simply stating that I hate Marla. Passionately.

You might be wondering who the F this Marla person is. Well she’s not a person; she’s a part of my foot.

VSP

VSP – Vision Service Plan. Aka the only eye insurance I’ve ever heard of. Despite the apparent monopoly (or my ignorance regarding their competitors), I love this company. LOVE it.

I had my annual eye exam a couple of weeks ago, which went more or less seamlessly. I should note that I’m like blind, for those of you who somehow missed that memo. Blind. Anyway, I called the doctor to schedule my appointment and was asked if I “had” to have Dr. N. Thinking she must have been too busy, I said no, I’ll take someone else. I just need to get in. So I was booked with Dr. C.

I arrived to the office to discover that Dr. C is the “low vision specialist”. Awesome. I’ve been switched from the regular eye doctor to the doctor for the blind. Definitely a blow to my ego, but I’ll get over it.

Pink Eye

I think I have it. That means throwing away my contacts. Lame!

Update: I just went on webmd’s symptom checker. Clicked on “eye”

Some of the symptoms I might choose from are:

*blank stare

*seeing letters, numbers or musical notes as colors — seriously!?

Keloids Can Kiss My Ass

I work in research. Every now and again, I try to “give back” to my research community. Mostly these are selfish endeavors, in that I do one study over another because I get paid. Well last week a paid research opportunity presented itself to me, so I jumped on it.

It was an MRI study. Get paid like $50 to get a 30 min MRI done. Sounds easy enough right? Well the problem with this is that you can’t bring metal into the MRI room. If you have a metal object, like say a piercing, lodged somewhere in you, it will certainly be ripped out. Painfully and traumatically. I knew this going into it, but figured I’d be fine.

I’ve had my cartilage pierced for like 9 years. Not a single problem with it. It should also be noted that I have never once attempted to remove it. I’m not even sure how to remove it.

Stress and Whatnot

Why is it that when I have to deal with something tedious and out of the ordinary, it’s never just one problem at a time? I’m going to go on a long rant here!

On 1/4, the first business day of 2010, I found several problems that needed to be tackled:

Swine

I went to the drug store today to pick up a refill of one of my prescriptions. I get that it’s a pharmacy so I’m likely to encounter the occasional sicky while I’m there. That’s fine.

What I have a problem with is this:

I walk into the store today and I see a kid, maybe 9 years old. He’s got a SARS mask on. OK, you’re sick and you’ve got a mask on. Good. He’s got this horrible sounding hack, so I’m actually pretty thankful that he’s got this mask on. I decided to pick up a card and some earplugs before making my way over to pick up my meds. While I’m wandering around the store, I see this kid again and again. I realized later that while his parents were in line at the pharmacy, they were letting this kid wander around the store, unsupervised. His shirt is soaked, so I assume this kid has an active fever. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this kid looks to have symptomatic H1N1. Definitely contagious. It would be one thing if he was standing with his parents, keeping his mask on, not touching anything. But this kid is wandering the store, picking up toys, touching all kinds of stuff, and the last time that I saw him, he had pulled his mask down around his neck and was only half coughing into it.

FUCK.

Granted I got my H1N1 vaccine over 10 days ago (the amount of time it takes to fully take effect) so I’m 99.9% sure I’m not going to catch this thing, but I guarantee that there are other people in this store who have not gotten their H1N1 shot. When you have a contagious disease and you don’t need to be out in public, stay the fuck away from people. Or at least keep your sick kid in the car if you have to bring him with you.

What is wrong with people?

Exactly What I Need

I was at Target yesterday and discovered this gem:

Adjustable weights! These would be perfect for my “home gym”. I put that in quotes because so far this “gym” consists of an exercise  ball that’s probably too small for me and a yoga mat. But whatever. I could totally use something like this for all of my I’m-feeling-too-lazy-to-leave-my-apartment-but-still-want-to-do-something-productive workouts. With adjustable sizes, it will allow me to do a variety of different exercises, as well as get stronger and not have to buy more weights. Plus, I couldn’t ask for easier storage!

Strength

I’ve resumed going to the gym. It’s soooooooo overdue. It’s more than a number on the scale. It’s more than just looking kick-ass. This time it’s legitimately mostly (well at least 65% of it) about actually being healthy and in shape. No more getting winded walking up the stairs! lol seriously though.

The problem is time. And I have none. But with stuff coming up this summer (starting in April – yikes!!), I’ve become motivated to get back to the land of sweat and hard work.

I’m still struggling to find time for cardio, but I’ve been managing about 2 days a week. I’d like 4, but that’s a luxury my 60+ hour work week just won’t afford. I go to the gym at work on my lunch break 2 days a week and lift. I haven’t seen any results on the scale (hi frustration!), nor have I seen much in the mirror, but I have finally started to notice that I’m actually getting stronger! I can handle heavier weights and I don’t get sore anymore. At least if nothing else is happening I can see results when I go. It’s a start.

Anyway the point of this blog is for motivation. Anyone have any tips on how to increase my cardio on a VERY limited time-frame? Anyone want to go with me to the gym? Having someone to workout with definitely decreases the chance I flake and go lay on my couch.

Thanks guys :)
