I Suck @ This Right Now

Sorry for the epic neglect folks. Life is BUSY at the moment. Here’s a quick status update on a lot of miscellaneous fronts. And read all of them, cuz some are kind of exciting :)

1. Work: Same shit, different day. I’m still working 3 jobs. I still hate working 3 jobs. A major source of my blog neglect lately has come from one job in particular, wiping me out so I have NO energy to blog when I get home. I mean 4 grants + coordinating a scientific conference? I’m one person, and I work there 20 hours a week. Whew!

2. Marla: She hurts. I saw a neurologist and got an EMG and NCV on Friday. SO STRANGE. They put things on my foot then shocked me with a cattle-prod-thing. Get the results on Wednesday.

3. Italy: Um….I have done NOTHING Italy-related in a month. I’m starting to feel bad. But I have other things on my mind…..

4. Love Life: Well, I’m 7 years into my current relationship. We live together. AND WE’RE GETTING MARRIED!!!!!

J took me on a weekend adventure, and wouldn’t tell me anything. I had a feeling, but then again, I’ve been waiting for a while for this and thought maybe I’d have to keep waiting (boys are kinda dense). But then he took me to Sea World, where we did a behind the scenes penguin encounter. Apparently everyone else on the tour knew but me. I have tons of pics and a video of me/us petting penguins. Then we went into the back of the exhibit, and magic happened :)

Basically you can go right up to the barrier that separates the staff and the penguins, but you can’t go onto the snow (oh yeah, it’s about 20 degrees in here!). J and I walked up to this barrier, and as luck would have it, a penguin was intrigued and waddled right over to us. The little guy came all the way to the barrier and stuck his beak through it. SO AWESOME. I think I squealed in delight, and then said (to the penguin) “I love you!”. J thought I was talking to him, so he said, “I love you too, (pulled out a ring) will you marry me?”

And so we’re engaged. And we’re 100% ecstatic about it. I feel lucky to have found the love of my life, who is also my best friend, and to know I will spend the rest of my life with him. I mean, he proposed with penguins. This is clearly the guy for me! And that brings me to #5…

5. Wedding Planning: I’ve been engaged for 9 days, and I think I have a venue set. We’ve come up with our first two choices for dates (2011) and are waiting to hear back from the event coordinator. I went out to dinner with some of my friends 2 days after the proposal and they had made a bet as to how many spreadsheets I had already created (2). A week later, I have 5 total. Although the big day is over a year away, I’m not wasting a minute. Planning a wedding is kind of fun (remind me I said that if I start getting stressed 10 months from now). J is totally wonderful too. He is totally interested in this, at least so far, and while I’m the lead on the wedding planning, he’s taking the reins on the honeymoon.

So yeah. I’ve been a busy bee. I really don’t want my blog to turn into a wedding planning frenzy, so I’ll do my best to keep variety. I’ll also do my best to keep up, rather than go for weeks with no posts. And on that note, I’m going to bed. Good night world! :)

2012 Olympic Mascots

It’s pretty well known that weird things transpire at the Olympics. I mean, the opening ceremonies in France included naked women wearing snow-globes after all! So it’s pretty safe to say that the unexpected should be expected.

Then you look at the Mascots for the 2012 Olympics in London.

What in the world is going on here? It’s like Gumby had a threesome with Rainbow Brite and Leela from Futurama.

And It’s Over

The 2010 Olympics have ended. Sadness. I can’t say this doesn’t come without some relief though, as I’ve been forced to stay up so incredibly late to watch these things (thanks NBC!). I swear, it almost requires me, the viewer, to do some sort of endurance training beforehand or something lol. Watching the Olympics in full = a sport of its own. Now that the games are over, I can also start reading the news again. Knowing what’s going on in the world is pretty rad. Oh there was an earthquake in Chile? You don’t say. lol

I have yet to watch the opening or closing ceremonies, but I feel that I have bored enough people about the Olympics for the last couple of weeks, so I’m gonna make this my last post on the topic. And what a better way to go out than with a news article on the top 8 winners and losers of the games? No, I’m not talking about athletes. Well not JUST athletes. Some of these other things are good too. Like winner #8:

8. Safe sex
In a victory for planned parenthood, the 7,000 residents of the Athletes Village ran through a supply of 100,000 free condoms halfway through the Games. “That’s about 14 condoms per person,” notes CBC. An emergency shipment was immediately dispatched to the libidinous Olympians.

An Open Letter to NBC

Dear Executives at NBC:

While I appreciate your coverage of the variety of sporting events at the Olympics, I have a bone to pick with you.

First and foremost, these Olympics are being held in Vancouver, which is the same timezone as the west coast. Unlike games past where the events would be held in the middle of the night for Americans, these sports are held at approximately the same time we are awake. Despite this, we are not receiving footage of the competitions until 8pm.

This is unacceptable. I cannot browse the internet during the day without fear that various Olympics results will be “spoiled”. You have multiple stations on which you can broadcast. Why not show the events, live, during the day on USA? Or MSNBC? A majority of Americans have some sort of recording device (TiVo, DVR, etc.) and could tape these events to watch at their convenience. If you wanted to re-broadcast the highlights in prime time on NBC, more power to you.

This is another issue I must raise. The prime time broadcast spans from 8pm to midnight. As a hard-working, tax-paying citizen, I must get up at 6:30am to get ready to go to my job. Staying up until midnight, or in some cases later, certainly doesn’t help come morning time. And while I have no problem rolling out of bed, throwing on some clothes, and driving to work, I can assure you that my boss is less than stoked to see yawning, grumpy, bags-under-the-eyes-which-aren’t-all-the-way-open-in-the-first-place Caro. Even moving the broadcast from the 8pm-12a slot to 7-11pm would vastly improve this situation.

Finally, if you are censoring the Olympics and waiting until 8pm to show me the clips of the competition you think I might enjoy, please refrain from broadcasting spoilers. Last night I turned on the NBC Nightly News at 6pm. After several non-gaming stories, the announcer switched gears to the Olympics. Thinking this was a preview of what I would be shown later in the evening, it didn’t even occur to me to change the channel. However, without warning, the results of the Women’s Downhill were posted. Thank you for telling me that Lindsey Vonn won gold. Thank you for sharing this with me before you showed it to me in any broadcast. If you are going to keep me in suspense until 8pm, please do not spoil the results at 6pm.

Aside from these issues, I greatly appreciate your commitment to showing me what you consider the highlights of the Olympics on a bi-annual basis.

Sincerely,

Caro

Why I <3 Old Men

Basically, this is the best thing that happened in football this week. Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams decided to stick it to the Bills after their big win. And since he’s 86, the best way for him to do that apparently was with his hands. Amazing.

Was it worth the $250,000 he was fined? For my entertainment value, absolutely!

Math Penguin

So apparently some school in California has implemented a novel approach to raising test scores: a mute penguin.

Strange concept – the kids like it because it’s like a video game, but I guess this penguin jumps around to show linear equations and whatnot? I’m not sure what the world has come to that kids only learn when there are video games involved, but I guess this is better than nothing.

And it goes to show that penguins are in fact a cure-all :)

Jackass

Usually it’s great to have the president talking about you. I guess not if you’re Kanye West.

Imagine this:

“Oh yeah, the president was talking about me!? What did he say”

“He called you a jackass”

LOL

WTF is wrong with people

OK so some people are just totally crazy. I understand being a fan of a sport, or liking a particular individual athlete. I’d be lying if i said I didn’t have my own healthy obsession with one or two myself :)

However, there is a line. And in addition to knowing where that line is, you really shouldn’t ever cross it.

This lady doesn’t seem to have that concept down. WTF is wrong with this woman?

She then informed the employees that there was a live goat in the trunk that she planned to slaughter later…They popped the trunk and found the animal, dyed purple and gold with the number 4 shaved into its side.

I’m not sure what statement she was trying to make with this? Yeah, I’m upset that Brett Favre has moved to Minnesota, but let’s be rational abou this. Sacrificing a goat just doesn’t seem like it would be a productive way to prevent this plan from setting into motion.

Lunatics.

Maybe we should expand (rather than continue to cut) the budget for mental health care in the US.

To play or retire?

I’ve come to the conclusion that Brett Favre will never retire. Ever.

Technically he’s done it twice now. Once in 2008 from the Packers, then again in 2009 from the Jets. Even after seeing him “unretire” in ’08 and sign with the Jets, I truly believed this second retirement was for good. After all, he’s old and although he did OK this year, he was falling apart by the end of the season. Yes it saddens me to say this about my dear Mr. Favre, but sometimes you just need to know when to call it a day.

It seems this knowledge is something the man lacks. After re-retiring, and then just 3-weeks ago going on the record as saying he’s gonna stay retired, he’s back. As a Viking.

Yep, that’s right. Brett Favre is now the QB for the Minnesota Vikings.

Jon Stewart vs. Idiocracy

Courtesy of Mario, I just had the privilege of watching Jon Stewart settle once and for all the debate of Barack Obama’s birth. There really are few things that make me as happy as when Jon Stewart comes on comedically points out other reporters’ stupidity. The man has a gift, and this segment is entertaining as hell.

Enjoy!
