Winter Wonderland

This is the current state of the G-B household:

A couple of days after Thanksgiving J and I went to Target and came home with our very first Chrismakkah tree! It had been chillin, naked, in our living room ever since. We decided to decorate and realized that we still needed a string of white lights. In addition, a single string of blue lights wasn’t gonna cut it. Who knew blue lights were so popular? I had an easy time finding them around Thanksgiving, but had to go on a major hunt this week. The second set of blue lights are on a white string, which isn’t ideal, but it works well enough for this year. So on Sunday night Jeremy and I put on the Christmas Carole cable station, lit 3 Hanukkah candles, and did some major tree decorating:

I absolutely love it!! When I get home from work I’ve been turning off all the lights in the house and turning on the tree. I love the tree lights + that fresh pine smell!

Strength

I’ve resumed going to the gym. It’s soooooooo overdue. It’s more than a number on the scale. It’s more than just looking kick-ass. This time it’s legitimately mostly (well at least 65% of it) about actually being healthy and in shape. No more getting winded walking up the stairs! lol seriously though.

The problem is time. And I have none. But with stuff coming up this summer (starting in April – yikes!!), I’ve become motivated to get back to the land of sweat and hard work.

I’m still struggling to find time for cardio, but I’ve been managing about 2 days a week. I’d like 4, but that’s a luxury my 60+ hour work week just won’t afford. I go to the gym at work on my lunch break 2 days a week and lift. I haven’t seen any results on the scale (hi frustration!), nor have I seen much in the mirror, but I have finally started to notice that I’m actually getting stronger! I can handle heavier weights and I don’t get sore anymore. At least if nothing else is happening I can see results when I go. It’s a start.

Anyway the point of this blog is for motivation. Anyone have any tips on how to increase my cardio on a VERY limited time-frame? Anyone want to go with me to the gym? Having someone to workout with definitely decreases the chance I flake and go lay on my couch.

Thanks guys :)

Looking Forward

I have a fabulous weekend coming up to round out a pretty chill week. Hooray!!

Friday: Hanging out with friends, and as an added bonus I don’t have to travel far from my house. Yes, that is a plus since I work so much now.

Saturday: Watching my team hopefully hold their own against a tough opponent. RELAXING. Maybe decorating the apartment. After a few months of bare-ish walls it will be nice to have more decorations. And last but definitely not least, Ladies-Only PJ Party! I’m super excited for this and have my purple satin PJs all ready to go :)

Sunday: Spending time with my great uncle and then going bridesmaid dress shopping!!! This is my first wedding and I couldn’t be more excited. Plus the dresses are super cute and that never hurts either :)

Labor Day

My parents have a campsite at a lake pretty near their house, and they go up there most weekends. They’ve been trying to get me to come out and spend a weekend up there for quite some time now, and I finally decided to trek out there on Sunday.

Why have I never made the time to do this previously?

First and foremost, when I say “campsite” I really mean high-end camping. I’ve definitely done camping a variety of ways, from the seriously rustic, no electricity/no civilization for 50 miles/pee in a bush kind to the camp in a tent that’s walking distance to a “real” bathroom, all the way up to the camp in a pop-up tent trailer that, depending on the location, may or may not have access to running water (but at least it’s more or less indoors). This is nothing like any of those. My parents bought a regular (non-popup) trailer a few years ago, and it’s so freaking wonderful. It’s bigger, has a separate bedroom area, a fully functioning kitchen, a bathroom with shower, and of course heat and A/C. The living room has a pop-out so that you have more space, and the kitchen table and the couch both fold down into additional beds. In my personal opinion, not having to leave your indoor bed in the middle of the night to pee does NOT equal true camping. It’s some serious luxury lol.

A Tan Caro?

I am fair skinned. Maybe that´s too generous. I´m extremely fair skinned. Despite being 25% Italian, I look 25% albino (and no, I am not actually an albino, thank you). Moreover, I do not tan. I might be out in the sun for hours and turn red, but I certainly do not tan.

While in Spain, I´ve had the opportunity to go to the beach on several occasions. Keep in mind I´ve been wearing my Neutrogena Sport Suncreen, spf 70. Since that´s almost gone I might switch to my regular Neutrogena, spf 100. Apparently yes they make spf 100. BTW, these products are AMAZING and I would absolutely recommend them to others. So, I was anticipating getting some color, hopefully not red, but maybe darker shades of white on this trip.

Museum of Catalan History

On one of my last days in Spain, Petra and I headed out to Barcelona for some last bits of sightseeing. First on the agenda was to see the Museum of Catalan History, which was supposed to be a really good look at how Catalonia came to be, and all the take overs and gained-then-lost-again battles for independence they’ve faced. It was indeed very informative, so much so that we spent nearly 4 hours there!!

While the history was incredibly fascinating, it started to drag on a bit after a while. Much to our shock and appreciation, we stumbled upon an interactive area…one where you could actually try on armor. Now this is what I’m talking about!!! (more…)

Parlez Voux Anglais?

Petra and I went to Paris for 4 days. I had a pretty good time, but I can assure you it was not my favorite city. I´m glad I was able to go there, see the sites, and experience all that Paris has to offer, but I don´t see myself ever feeling the need to go back. In light of this single lifetime journey to Paris, I will just write one single entry in my blog.

I´ve already written about the horrible entry we had into the city. Things got a bit better, but not much. I´m convinced the French truly do not like people who don´t speak French, nor do they enjoy tourists. I fell into both of those categories.

Winging It

When I travel I like to have a general sense of what I’m going to do. I usually buy some sort of book and pick out cool stuff. It helps me feel organized, which feels good. This was not the case on my way to Europe.

I pitched to J about my 9 hour layover in Dublin and came to realize I should go into town and sightsee. Mind you, this was decided the night before. So I few to Dublin, no guidebook, no plan, just vague idea of what I might do.

BEST layover ever! Turns out even though it was my first point of entry into the EU, I didn’t have to get all my luggage through customs. In fact, “customs” involved me walking through a door. I had been prepared to take a cab into town but found the tourism desk where I learned about the express bus. SCORE! I’m always down to save some money!

Live From New York It’s Saturday Night!

Our last full day in NY was spent mostly at NBC studios. We did the combo ticket: NBC studios tour, Radio City Music Hall tour, ticket to Top of the Rock. At only $43, it’s quite the value. And maybe I was just oblivious cuz I didn’t know about this gem until we got there, but this is one of New York’s best kept secrets!

THE_Trip_2009 907

In fact, the NBC studio tour was one of my favorite parts of this trip (with Perilla of course!). We had to go through security and were told “if you are carrying a firearm or other weapon you will have to check it before you can come upstairs.” Yes, they had a gun check. So no one needed to stop and we were on our way. We saw the studio for the Nightly News with Brian Williams. Interesting, but not what I came for. Then we moved to the suite that houses Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Dude the studio is TINY! Our guide explained how they make it appear bigger, but its just a hoax lol. It was cool though. And everything is covered because the HD cameras pick up every spec of dust lol.

Moving on down a hallway full of stills from various SNL sketches. Yep, we were headed to the studio itself! Again, this is pretty small. I wished I could take pictures but that was “proprietary”. Fail. Our guide asked who was a fan of SNL. Most people raised their hand. Then he quizzed us, “Live from New York it’s __”. Many people failed this lol.

Perilla!

Seeing as how I had a major crush on Harold from Top Chef season 1, of course I had to go to his restaurant while in NYC! This has been on my to do list for at least 2 years so you better believe I made reservations a month in advance. For anyone who wants to do the same, he’s on Open Table or you can just go through his website up to 29 days in advance.

I <3 Perilla
