3 Strikes and I’m Out

I went to the mall a few days ago. It was a way overdue trip, as I had several things to return from almost a month ago. I also needed to have my ring fixed. I guess I was putting it off cuz I am busy/lazy, and 2 of the 3 stores I needed to go to aren’t located in the mall close to me. So on Tuesday I went to the closest place with all three stores.

As I’m walking in I remember that the shoe store has a weird policy. Worried, I looked at my receipt. Yep, 10 days to return an item. It’s been like 20. Fffffuuuuu. However, they will give you cash if you paid cash. I started plotting how I could get money back out of this transaction.

Stop #1: Shoe Store

VSP

VSP – Vision Service Plan. Aka the only eye insurance I’ve ever heard of. Despite the apparent monopoly (or my ignorance regarding their competitors), I love this company. LOVE it.

I had my annual eye exam a couple of weeks ago, which went more or less seamlessly. I should note that I’m like blind, for those of you who somehow missed that memo. Blind. Anyway, I called the doctor to schedule my appointment and was asked if I “had” to have Dr. N. Thinking she must have been too busy, I said no, I’ll take someone else. I just need to get in. So I was booked with Dr. C.

I arrived to the office to discover that Dr. C is the “low vision specialist”. Awesome. I’ve been switched from the regular eye doctor to the doctor for the blind. Definitely a blow to my ego, but I’ll get over it.

Chicago

I totally forgot to post about my upcoming travels. Trip #1: Chicago!

A friend of mine has to be out there for 2 weeks for work, so her company is paying for her hotel over the weekend in between. When she initially invited me for the weekend, I was hesitant since I’m trying to start up a savings account again. Luckily my boss gave me (another) free plane ticket anywhere in the US this year for the holidays! Free flight + free lodging = recipe for a wonderful girls trip in the Windy City!

One hitch: We’re going in February, which is notoriously frigid in Chicago. Keep in mind also that I am a cold-blooded creature, and require constant heating. I mean seriously, 55 degrees is COLD. 45 – well it might as well just snow. So looking at the weather forecast indicating temps in the high 20′s/low 30′s minus windchill, I’d bet a 30% chance I would freeze to death.

Dresses!

I totally forgot to add some fun news to my winter break update. I was asked to be a bridesmaid in another wedding this Spring! I’m really happy that this is finally happening for this couple and I’m really excited to get to share their celebration with them!

The wedding is pretty soon, so we had to hurry up and make a decision on dresses. So after 2 days of shopping and trying on dress after dress (some cuter than others), this is what I ended up with:

Winter Wonderland

This is the current state of the G-B household:

A couple of days after Thanksgiving J and I went to Target and came home with our very first Chrismakkah tree! It had been chillin, naked, in our living room ever since. We decided to decorate and realized that we still needed a string of white lights. In addition, a single string of blue lights wasn’t gonna cut it. Who knew blue lights were so popular? I had an easy time finding them around Thanksgiving, but had to go on a major hunt this week. The second set of blue lights are on a white string, which isn’t ideal, but it works well enough for this year. So on Sunday night Jeremy and I put on the Christmas Carole cable station, lit 3 Hanukkah candles, and did some major tree decorating:

I absolutely love it!! When I get home from work I’ve been turning off all the lights in the house and turning on the tree. I love the tree lights + that fresh pine smell!

Exactly What I Need

I was at Target yesterday and discovered this gem:

Adjustable weights! These would be perfect for my “home gym”. I put that in quotes because so far this “gym” consists of an exercise  ball that’s probably too small for me and a yoga mat. But whatever. I could totally use something like this for all of my I’m-feeling-too-lazy-to-leave-my-apartment-but-still-want-to-do-something-productive workouts. With adjustable sizes, it will allow me to do a variety of different exercises, as well as get stronger and not have to buy more weights. Plus, I couldn’t ask for easier storage!

Chrismakkah

I celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah. This year I’m blending the two.

After spending about an hour in Target yesterday I walked out fully loaded: blue velvet tree skirt, blue lights (need to get a string of white as well), white and silver stockings, a 5.5 foot tree, a silver star tree-topper, an 18 inch tinsel penguin that I have NO idea where I’m going to put, hooks for my ornaments, holiday shaped cookie cutters, and penguin wrapping paper (it’s holiday-neutral!). $120 later, I’m ready to go!

I’m posting this now to motivate myself to head up to my parents house and pick up my box of ornaments. I need to decorate! Once it’s all done I’ll share pictures of my very own Winter Wonderland.

Words cannot express my joy!

FINALLY!

A friend got me the single most amazing set of pajamas a couple of years ago. They’re from Victoria’s Secret and I wear them more or less ALL of the time. What makes them special is the length.

I’m not the tallest person in the world, but like my mother, I have very long legs. This makes the “regular” length PJ pants a tad to short. One thing I’ve always hated about PJs is that the legs ride up and end up around my knees in the morning. Well, not with these long ones!

Ever since I received these I’ve been looking to find more. Of course I can only seem to find them when I have NO money to spend. And then just like that, they’re gone again.

Well HELLO long PJs :) Victoria’s Secret just launched a preview of their Fall collection, and they have 3 styles of PJs that come in a variety of lengths: The Afterhours Tank Pajama, The Sleepover Pajama in Flannel, and The Dreamer Satin Pajama.

I’m in love. Definitely going to have to buy at least one of each of these styles. (more…)

Granas Table

UPDATE: I FOUND ONE! This table was $100 at Ikea, plus tax. I got it unassembled on Craigslist (fit into my car!) for $50. Super easy to put together, and at over 50% savings, this is truly my kind of deal. I’m totally happy now :)

I’m sad/pissed/frustrated/upset/mad/at a loss for words. Ugh, so many emotions. Basically I had found a coffee table I really really liked. I’m pretty picky about coffee tables, and it’s hard to find one that I like that also goes with the decor of the living room. But I did it. I found the perfect coffee table: Ikea Granas Series.

I’ve been waiting to purchase it because I want to make absolutely certain that once the new TV and couches are selected, I still love this table in reference to its surroundings. Also gotta make sure the dimensions suit the setup of the room. So I waited.
