Updated: New York Segment

I know that I took a RIDICULOUS amount of time in adding pictures to my blog, but I’ve finally gotten my stuff together and started doing it. I also added some posts about things that had been left out. So….all of NY is updated!!

Check out these posts, which are either new altogether, or have just been updated:

American Museum of Natural History

Times Square

Perilla!

Subway

Live From New York It’s Saturday Night!

Museum of Sex: NY

Closing Thoughts: Big Apple

I also added a category called “THE Trip 2009” so all my posts related to this epic journey will be more searchable.

And that’s all for tonight. I’ll do Dublin and Spain tomorrow. Maybe even Paris too if I’m feeling up to the challenge!

Closing Thoughts: The Big Apple

Time in NYC coming to a close saddened me. There’s so much to do and I absolutely love it all. I did all the main things I had hoped to accomplish but there’s always others. This will be added to my list if places to go back to!

Here’s some random pictures that don’t correspond to any blog post:

Museum of Sex: NY

New York also has a little known (or at least I’ve never heard of it) museum dedicated to sex. Having time to kill and being totally interested as to what might be contained here, J and I ventured in.

Warning: This blog post definitely contains ADULT content, in the form of text and pictures. Continue at your own risk :)

Live From New York It’s Saturday Night!

Our last full day in NY was spent mostly at NBC studios. We did the combo ticket: NBC studios tour, Radio City Music Hall tour, ticket to Top of the Rock. At only $43, it’s quite the value. And maybe I was just oblivious cuz I didn’t know about this gem until we got there, but this is one of New York’s best kept secrets!

In fact, the NBC studio tour was one of my favorite parts of this trip (with Perilla of course!). We had to go through security and were told “if you are carrying a firearm or other weapon you will have to check it before you can come upstairs.” Yes, they had a gun check. So no one needed to stop and we were on our way. We saw the studio for the Nightly News with Brian Williams. Interesting, but not what I came for. Then we moved to the suite that houses Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Dude the studio is TINY! Our guide explained how they make it appear bigger, but its just a hoax lol. It was cool though. And everything is covered because the HD cameras pick up every spec of dust lol.

Moving on down a hallway full of stills from various SNL sketches. Yep, we were headed to the studio itself! Again, this is pretty small. I wished I could take pictures but that was “proprietary”. Fail. Our guide asked who was a fan of SNL. Most people raised their hand. Then he quizzed us, “Live from New York it’s __”. Many people failed this lol.

Subway

I’m super impressed with the public transportation system in New York, specifically the subway. Its super cheap for an all day pass and you can get anywhere you wanna go super fast. Definitely a great change of pace from what I’m used to!!

Also, one day we were shocked to see workers working on a LIVE train line. Sure enough, they were there, doing who knows what to the tracks. They had one guy with a flashlight as the “lookout” and the others were just working away. Whenever a train came, they nonchalantly hid between 2 column posts. Talk about crazy! Definitely must be a weight requirement for that job – fatty’s need not apply for risk of definite bodily harm by oncoming trains!

Working on live tracks? Not a problem!

Perilla!

Seeing as how I had a major crush on Harold from Top Chef season 1, of course I had to go to his restaurant while in NYC! This has been on my to do list for at least 2 years so you better believe I made reservations a month in advance. For anyone who wants to do the same, he’s on Open Table or you can just go through his website up to 29 days in advance.

American Museum of Natural History

J and I could have easily spent the entire day here. It was THAT amazing. I had heard that the dinosaur exhibit was a must-see, so we headed there first, after we wasted our time in some movie. First and foremost, this movie was called something along the lines of “The Great Ocean” or whatever, which led me to believe it would be about, you know, the ocean. Fact: this movie should have been called “Sardines in South Africa” because it was actually just about the sardine farming practices in South Africa, and the ways in which sardines have evolved to survive attackers. I mean it was interesting, but not what I had paid to see.

Anyway, back on topic. Dinosaurs. They were just as great as I had hoped. Lots of fossils, plus they even had dinosaur eggs! I had never seen one, so this was pretty cool.

Times Square

My journey started in New York. J and I flew separate and met up at the airport. Since it was late we checked into the hotel then found food. We weren’t tired so J took me to Times Square. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting but I was more satisfied than I hoped! All the lights and the energy was just amazing. We stayed for a while and toured the M&M and Hershey’s stores.

Starting Out on THE Journey

Ok I’m super late to the game, but I’m going to start posting retroactive entries that chronicle the highlights (and low points) of my journey through the east coast and select parts of Europe. Hopefully I will catch up by the time I leave! Haha

Anyway these posts will mostly be from my phone and will more or less lack photos. I’ll try to add pictures as I can. Otherwise I will just edit from home.

Let the fun begin!

The Daily Show

Why is it so hard to get tickets to the Daily Show? I’m even down to go see the Colbert Report if all else fails (yes, it’s a good show, but I only have time for 1 and let’s face it, I LOVE Jon Stewart!). However, it seems unlikely I’m going to get tickets to either, which simultaneously angers and depresses me. I’m just trying to have a good time on my trip and see all that New York has to offer. I don’t think that’s asking too much! :(
